Who is Merrick?

 February 28, 2007
02/28/2007 AP - John L. Shafer said he had no explanation for why he left
his 9-year-old yellow Lab, Merrick, to starve to death.
Cumberland County Judge Skip Ebert gave Shafer, 31, of
Silver Spring Twp., two chances to explain the
abandonment before sentencing him to 3 to 23 months in county
prison and fining him $500 on his cruelty to animals’ conviction.
Ebert called the "long and unnecessary cruelty" to the dog
unconscionable. An investigator said Merrick had been without
food or water for two or three weeks before he died Police
said Shafer left the Labrador retriever, which had belonged
to his father, in an East Pennsboro Twp. apartment after
he and his wife separated in April. Merrick escaped from the
apartment and was emaciated and too weak to stand when a mail
carrier found him June 24, police said. Bees had built a nest
in a tumor that bulged from the dog's side. Merrick died as
he was being taken to a veterinarian. A necropsy showed the
dog died from dehydration and starvation, police said.
